SGF Akume denies interest in APC national chairmanship race

By Kunle Sanni –
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has denied claims that he is vying for the position of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that he remains fully committed to his current role in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume described the reports as false and intended to distract him from the national responsibilities entrusted to him.
“The attention of Senator George Akume has been drawn to a publication claiming he is among those jostling for the APC National Chairmanship,” the statement read. “To the best of our knowledge, this is a fabrication meant to distract the SGF from his critical duties in the federal government.”
Akume, a former governor and senator from Benue State, made it clear that he is not interested in any internal party contest, emphasizing that his priority is to help the Tinubu administration deliver on its Renewed Hope Agenda.
“His main focus, he insists, is to ensure he does not in any way betray the trust that President Tinubu reposes in him,” Odunuga stated.
Speaking directly on the matter, Akume said he is not in a hurry to abandon his current assignment, describing the report as baseless. “I am not in a race that I am not interested in,” he declared.
He added that while the APC may consider zoning the chairmanship position to the North-Central, there are many qualified individuals from the region, but he is not one of them.
“I am a firm believer in the principle that whatever God plans for you will surely come to pass. Everything I have been in life has been given to me by God through the instrumentality of people, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.
