Shettima backs India’s smart class proposal, seeks local adaptation for Nigerian schools

By Kunle Sanni –

Vice President Kashim Shettima has endorsed a proposal by Schoolnet India Ltd and Learnet Skills Ltd to introduce KYAN smart class technology in Nigerian schools, describing the initiative as a valuable tool for improving learning outcomes nationwide.

Speaking on Monday during a meeting with a delegation led by Schoolnet’s Managing Director and CEO, RCM Reddy, the vice president said the digital learning package — featuring interactive smart boards, projectors and preloaded content — could significantly transform education if adapted to Nigeria’s local curriculum and context.

Shettima, who recalled using the KYAN solution during his tenure as governor of Borno State, praised the system as “a very rugged machine” capable of teaching large groups of students with ease. He stressed that the technology would be especially useful in primary and secondary schools, urging the company to collaborate with federal officials to develop a domesticated version suited to Nigerian needs.

Highlighting the progress of Edo and Enugu states in building smart school systems, the vice president emphasised the importance of integrating indigenous initiatives with the KYAN package to enhance nationwide impact.

In his remarks, Schoolnet CEO Reddy said the company was inspired by Nigeria’s drive to modernise classrooms. He described KYAN as a “school in a box” — an all-in-one device equipped with a computer, projector, smart board capability, camera and digital content for grades 1 to 10, with or without internet connectivity. He noted that when deployed effectively, the innovation can elevate teacher performance at all levels.

Reddy acknowledged the vice president’s guidance and pledged to work with government officials to design a customised version of the solution, including for remote communities lacking reliable internet access.
