Solanke’s double denies Man City three points against Tottenham

Dominic Solanke produced a stunning piece of improvisation as Tottenham came from two goals down to earn a point, dealing a serious setback to Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes.

City appeared in total control at half-time, with goals from Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo highlighting their dominance, while Thomas Frank’s side endured another hostile reaction from their own fans.

Solanke gave Spurs hope by pulling one back before showing superb presence of mind to divert Conor Gallagher’s cross — which was behind him — over City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The equaliser capped a comeback that had seemed unthinkable at half-time, after City had outclassed Spurs with apparent ease. City had already threatened before Cherki put them ahead, as the Spurs defence allowed him to advance unchecked and send a low shot beyond keeper Guglielmo Vicario.

City’s second goal seemed inevitable, eventually arriving moments before half-time when Spurs defender Radu Dragusin’s poor clearance was collected by Rodri. He found Bernardo Silva, who slipped in Semenyo for a composed finish.

Spurs, as often in recent times, were jeered off at half-time but finally roused themselves after the break, applying pressure on City. Donnarumma made a superb save from Destiny Udogie before Spurs offered more hope when Solanke bundled the ball home, though City were furious, believing he had fouled Marc Guehi.

Solanke then produced a moment to remember as Spurs drew level, executing a spectacular “scorpion kick” to turn Gallagher’s cross beyond Donnarumma’s reach.
