South West Governors to honour Adebanjo with befitting funeral – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced on Tuesday that the governors of the South-West region will ensure a befitting funeral for the late elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Sanwo-Olu made the statement during a condolence visit to the Lekki residence of the late nationalist, where he expressed his sympathy to the Adebanjo family.

Accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and other government officials, Sanwo-Olu praised Adebanjo for leading a fulfilling life.

Describing the late Afenifere leader as a “true Omoluabi,” Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted Adebanjo’s ability to foster relationships across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic, cultural, and regional groups throughout his life.

“On behalf of the South-West Governors, the people, and the government of Lagos State, we are here to condole with the family. Baba lived a life full of purpose, and he was worthy of emulation.

“He was always at his best, speaking truth to power and defending his beliefs. His relationships transcended all boundaries, and he was indeed a true Omoluabi,” said Sanwo-Olu.

The Governor also expressed the collective grief of the South-West governors, acknowledging the difficulty of filling the significant void left by Adebanjo. He assured the family and Afenifere that they would all work together to ensure a dignified farewell.

“Our prayer is that God grants him eternal rest and gives his family the strength to bear this loss. We also pray that God grants the South-West and Nigeria the wisdom to fill the gap Baba has left behind,” Sanwo-Olu added.

While speaking on the recent death of another prominent elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, who passed away four days after Adebanjo, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged leaders to take inspiration from the lives of both men.

“These great men, Adebanjo and Clark, were instrumental in shaping this country as we know it today. For those of us in leadership positions, we must learn from their legacy and continue to work towards moving Nigeria forward,” the Governor advised.
