South West PDP sets sights on elections, dismisses coalition talks

The South West caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its commitment to winning the forthcoming bye-elections in Oyo and Ogun States, as well as the local government elections in Lagos State. The party expressed confidence in securing widespread victories across the region.

This declaration was made on Friday, July 11, 2025, during a strategic meeting at the Olusoji Adagunodo South West PDP Zonal Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State. Party leaders emphasized their dedication to the unity, growth, and stability of the PDP both regionally and nationally.

Addressing rumours of mergers or defections, the caucus dismissed any speculation, asserting that the PDP in the South West remains united and focused on consolidating its base ahead of the 2027 general elections. It also expressed readiness for the upcoming National Convention.

The meeting commended the leadership of Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, describing their administrations as people-oriented and impactful. It noted that their performance had boosted the PDP’s popularity among voters in the region.

In alignment with the National Working Committee (NWC), the caucus expressed support for forming alliances with credible and like-minded individuals, aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). It described such collaboration as essential to rescuing the country from hardship.

The caucus condemned the Federal Government’s continued withholding of local government allocations meant for Osun State, describing the action as unconstitutional. It called for the immediate release of the funds to support grassroots development.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating economic conditions and growing insecurity under the APC-led administration, the caucus echoed Governor Makinde’s assertion that the 2027 election would be a face-off between the Nigerian people and the APC.

It concluded by urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to democratic values, assuring them that the PDP is prepared to offer an alternative leadership that will restore the economy, ensure security, and deliver good governance.
