Speaker supports Tinubu’s second-term bid, calls for continuity for performing lawmakers

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for political continuity beyond 2027, urging support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the return of experienced lawmakers to sustain ongoing reforms.

Speaking at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Friday, the Speaker said Nigeria was at a critical stage that requires discipline, courage and consistency in governance.

Tajudeen described the current period as a “defining hour” for both the ruling party and the country, stressing that difficult economic reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration were necessary to reset Nigeria’s economic foundation.

According to him, the government inherited serious economic challenges, including unsustainable fiscal commitments and systemic inefficiencies, which required bold corrective measures rather than temporary solutions.

He acknowledged criticisms surrounding rising living costs and economic adjustments but defended the administration’s policies, arguing that postponing reforms would have placed a heavier burden on future generations.

The Speaker said early signs of progress were already visible, citing improved revenues to states, increased transparency, infrastructure development and enhanced security coordination as indicators that reforms were beginning to take effect.

Tajudeen openly endorsed the continuation of Tinubu’s reform agenda beyond the next general election, arguing that stability in leadership would help consolidate the gains already made.

He said continuity was necessary not for political convenience but to ensure that ongoing reforms are fully implemented and deliver long-term benefits.
