Speeding driver kills 12-year-old, injures sister on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway

A tragic accident on Monday afternoon claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl and left her 15-year-old sister critically injured after they were struck by a speeding driver along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

According to a statement signed on Tuesday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident occurred at about 3:35 p.m. at Ogundare bus stop.

The driver, who remains unidentified, was reportedly driving at high speed on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane when he hit the two schoolgirls as they made their way home.

The victims sustained severe injuries and were immediately rushed to Orile Agege General Hospital for treatment. Sadly, the 12-year-old succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention, while her sister was later transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for further care.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare M. Jimoh, confirmed that a thorough investigation into the incident is underway. He urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, including speed limits and road safety laws, to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

Expressing condolences on behalf of the police command, CP Jimoh extended sympathies to the victims’ family and assured the public that the authorities would ensure justice is served.
