Stakeholders advocate tougher sanctions on gender-based violence in Ondo

By Boye Oyeyemi –

Stakeholders in Ondo State have called for stronger measures to curb gender-based violence, urging authorities and residents to take concrete action to protect women and girls.

The call followed an awareness walk held on Tuesday as part of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, themed: “Unite to end digital violence against all women and girls.”

The governor’s wife, Mrs Seun Aiyedatiwa, urged victims to speak out and asked them to call the toll-free line 08001001010 for help.

She commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and partner organisations for supporting the campaign.

She stressed that all cases must be reported to the appropriate agencies and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.

The commissioner for women affairs, Dr Seun Osamaye, said the event brought together key stakeholders who can drive change in ending violence against women and girls in the state.

The commissioner of police, Adebowale Lawal, and NSCDC commandant, Mr Oluyemi Ibiloye, both pledged continuous collaboration, urging the public not to shield offenders and to promptly report cases.

FIDA chairperson, Mrs Bolanle Olafunmiloye, encouraged women to defend one another, saying, “we must stand up and say enough is enough,” after which the event ended with an awareness walk to the Deji’s Palace in Akure.
