State police bill to be presented to N’Assembly soon – AbdulRazaq

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has disclosed that discussions on the establishment of state police are progressing, with a legislative framework expected to be presented to the National Assembly of Nigeria.

Speaking in his capacity as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) on Sunday, AbdulRazaq said consultations are ongoing among security stakeholders under the coordination of the Office of the National Security Adviser of Nigeria, adding that governors have already submitted their contributions to support the process.

According to him, the outcome of the consultations would help shape the legal structure required to operationalise state policing in Nigeria.

He said: “On the issue of state police, discussions are ongoing amongst various security organisations, led by the National Security Adviser, and the NGF has made its contribution. That document will be taken to the National Assembly to see how we can have a legislative framework for state police.”

The Kwara governor, who was part of a delegation of state governors led by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Lagos residence of the President, also conveyed seasonal greetings to President Bola Tinubu, congratulating him on what he described as successful diplomatic engagements, particularly his recent state visit to the United Kingdom.

AbdulRazaq noted that the visit, described as the first of this level in 37 years, reflects renewed international confidence in Nigeria and could open the door to new investments and stronger bilateral relations.

He expressed optimism that agreements reached during the trip would translate into economic growth and improved living standards for Nigerians.
