State policing key to effective security, says Osun Amotekun commandant

The Osun Commandant of the Western Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, Dr. Isaac Omoyele, has dismissed fears that state policing could be used for political manipulation, describing it as a necessary step toward achieving effective security.
Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Osogbo on Tuesday, Omoyele argued that the existing federal police force is equally vulnerable to political interference, but this does not render the institution inherently flawed.
He emphasized that establishing state police forces would enhance security, as they would be more accountable to the local communities they serve.
The Amotekun Commandant recalled that Nigeria once operated a similar system before it was abolished.
According to him, “I think state policing is the best option. We have federal courts and state courts, and each operates within its jurisdiction. There is no reason to argue that state police should not have a place in this country.
“When people talk about state policing, what comes to mind is politicians using them, but I think that notion is absurd.”
Omoyele maintained that with proper legal safeguards, the risk of politicization would be minimized, allowing state police to function effectively.
In addition to advocating for state policing, Omoyele noted that the Amotekun corps has been working tirelessly to combat crime and has made significant strides in keeping the state safe.
He further disclosed that the corps has been collaborating with other security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), to share intelligence and enhance their operations.
