A lecturer and former Provost, College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Prof. Olu Aderounmi has disclosed that pupils and students in rural areas perform better academically than their counterparts in urban areas.
Aderounmi, who was a guest speaker at the scholarship award presentation to indigent students across the three Akure speaking communities at St. James C.A.C Primary School, Irowo, organised by Akure Divisional Renewal Group, on Wednesday, noted that students in rural areas tend to be focused and less distracted compare to those in the cities where they are easily attracted to beautiful things of life.
According to him, parents should not abandon their responsibilities in the hands of teachers by teaching and guiding their wards so as to be more useful to the society.
Traditional ruler of Ijigba in Akure South Local Government, who is the founder of the charity group, Oba Luyi Rotimi said the essence of the scholarship is to assist and encourage indigent students to do more academically and to give them hope that all is not lost
“We are all aware that the economy is biting every one of us and we thought of assisting students who are academically good but indigent through our widows might.
“It is a challenge to the students to excel and do more exploits in their academics rather than embarking on things that are not necessary,” he said.
Commissioner for Education, Dr Femi Agagu had earlier said that the state government is ready to support anyone or group of persons that will bring about improvement in the standard of education in the state.
Six students were awarded scholarship across the public schools in Akure North, Akure South and Ifedore Local Governments areas of the state.
Some of the beneficiaries are; Fashina Temitope (Anglican Grammar School, Ijare), Damilola Tobiloba (Ijapo High School, Akure), Adeniyi Opeyemi (Ijomimo High School, Akure), Oluwagbenga Christiana (C.A.C Grammar School, Akure), Oluwamodupe Mercy (Omoluorogbo Grammar School, Akure) and Omoboyede Erica (Ejioba High School, Oba Ile).
