Super Eagles arrive Guinea Bissau for crucial AFCON clash

The Super Eagles have arrived in Guinea-Bissau ahead of Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against the Djurtus, aiming to build on their opening-day victory over Madagascar.

The Nigerian delegation arrived in Bissau on Sunday evening, less than 48 hours after securing a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Madagascar took an early lead through Ehsan Kari, but debutant George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time before another debutant, Moses Usor, completed Nigeria’s comeback in the 65th minute.

The result gave Eric Chelle’s side three points from their opening Group L fixture and a positive start to the qualifying campaign.

Guinea-Bissau also began with a win, defeating Tanzania 2-0 through goals from Franculino Djú and Mama Baldé to move top of Group L on goal difference.

With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are competing for the qualifying slot available to the highest-placed non-host nation in Group L.

Chelle has acknowledged the different challenge posed by Guinea-Bissau, stressing the need to analyse the Madagascar game and find the right approach for the away fixture.

Tuesday’s encounter will be played at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau, with kick-off scheduled for 4pm Nigerian time. With both sides on three points, the match could prove significant in the early Group L qualification race as the Super Eagles seek another positive result on the road to the 2027 AFCON.
