Super Eagles goalie under investigation for betting scandal

Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is under investigation for a betting scandal and could face a ban from all competitions if found guilty.
According to reports from Messaggero Veneto, Okoye allegedly bet on receiving a yellow card during a match against Lazio on March 11, 2024. He was booked for time-wasting in the 64th minute of the game.
Prosecutors suspect that Okoye deliberately sought to receive the yellow card to profit from the bet. As a result, the Nigerian international faces accusations of fraud.
This development is a significant setback for Okoye, who had been enjoying a successful season with Udinese prior to his injury and subsequent surgery. His impressive performances had earned him recognition as one of the top goalkeepers in the league.
If found guilty, Okoye could face severe penalties, including a minimum four-year ban from all competitions and potential legal consequences.
However, Okoye’s lawyers have strongly denied the allegations, describing them as baseless and lacking substantive evidence.
Udinese is hopeful that Okoye will be cleared after the investigation, as they are currently six points behind Fiorentina, who sit in sixth place. The team may need the experienced goalkeeper to boost their push for a European qualification spot.
Okoye is also determined to clear his name and demonstrate his quality to the new Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, ahead of the next international break in March.
