The Super Eagles of Nigeria have paid tribute to fans who died while showing support and patriotism during the last Africa Cup of Nations semifinal clash against South Africa.
The tension-soaked encounter, which Nigeria eventually won via penalties, kept many Nigerians on the edge of their seats.
No fewer than five Nigerians reportedly died while watching the penalty shoot-outs after a 1-1 scoreline at regular time.
Those who died included a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh; the Kwara State University Deputy Bursar, Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi; a sales representative, Mikhail Osundiji; a serving National Youth Service Corps member, identified simply as Samuel; and an Anambra-born businessman based in Côte d’Ivoire, Osondu Nwoye.
“We honour and remember our beloved supporters and fans who lost their lives one year ago during our semifinal match against South Africa in Bouaké. May they rest in peace, forever in our hearts,” the Super Eagles tweeted.
The Super Eagles, however, lost 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in the final clash of the tournament.
Under the tutelage of their new head coach, Eric Chelle, the team will continue their quest for a 2026 World Cup ticket on March 17.
They will square up against table leaders Rwanda.
