Super Eagles ready for battle as Ekong predicts tough Congo DR clash

Nigeria’s captain, William Ekong, has admitted that the Leopards of the Democratic Republic of Congo will pose a tough challenge in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Africa Play-off Tournament final but assured that the Super Eagles are fully equipped to triumph at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay El Hassan.
Both nations, who share five African titles between them, will meet in a decisive encounter that will determine Africa’s representative at the Intercontinental Play-offs for two remaining slots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled to be held in Mexico in four months.
Ekong noted that Congo DR reached this stage due to their toughness and ambition, stressing that they, too, are determined to secure a World Cup ticket. He added that the Super Eagles’ squad of 24 players — with only about four having previous World Cup experience — are highly motivated to seize the opportunity on Sunday.
Ekong, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and Chidozie Awaziem remain the only players in the current squad who featured at Russia 2018, placing on them an added responsibility to guide the younger members of the team.
Coach Éric Chelle’s Congo DR side comes with several attacking threats, including Spain-based Cédric Bakambu, France-based Nathaniel Mbuku, former Russia U21 star Theo Bongonda and Pyramids FC forward Fiston Mayele.
In midfield, English Premier League midfielder Noah Sadiki and Spain-based Charles Pickel are expected to anchor play, while the attack-minded Aaron Wan-Bissaka leads a disciplined defence that also features captain Chancel Mbemba, who is set for his 101st international cap.
Chelle has all 24 players available, including Iwobi, who is set to earn his 91st cap, and Moses Simon, who will make his 87th appearance. Ekong confirmed that the entire squad is focused and committed to securing victory.
He added that although Nigeria would have preferred to qualify automatically, the team now has a second chance and is determined not to waste it. Sunday’s match will kick off at 8 p.m.
