Super Falcons face Algeria in final group game at WAFCON

By Olaolu Joseph –
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will take on Algeria’s Lady Fennecs in their final Group B match at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
A 3-0 win over Tunisia and a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Botswana have already earned the Nigerians a spot in the quarter-finals, but the Rasheedat Ajibade-captained side is looking to round off their group campaign on a perfect note.
The team must, however, improve on their performance, as they were unconvincing in the match against Botswana, which they narrowly won thanks to a late strike by Chiwendu Ihezuo.
The nine-time champions will also use the encounter to prepare for their quarter-final clash, which could be against hosts Morocco or an ambitious Zambian side.
Head coach Justin Madugu is aware that his players must be at their best to overcome any of their potential opponents — Morocco, Zambia, or even Senegal, who still have a chance to progress if they defeat the Lionesses in their final Group A game.
“Our commitment has been to take it one game at a time. We believe in our approach and will adopt the tactics, pattern, and strategy we believe can give us victory in each game. We respect all the teams but fear none,” he said.
Algeria’s 1-0 win over Botswana on Group B’s Matchday 1 and their subsequent draw with Tunisia have given them four points — two behind Nigeria. They also remain in contention for a quarter-final spot, with potential opponents including defending champions South Africa, Mali, Tanzania, or Ghana, as Group C remains delicately poised.
Today’s (Sunday) encounter will take place at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
