Super Falcons set for WAFCON final clash against Morocco

By Tosin Omojola –
Nigeria’s Super Falcons face a tough hurdle in their bid to claim a tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, as they go up against host nation Morocco in the final of the 13th edition of the championship.
The Justin Madugu-tutored Falcons will need to be at their best, as they not only face a strong Moroccan side but also the overwhelming support of the home crowd.
It has been a relatively challenging path to the final for the Nigerians, who began their campaign with a 3-0 win over Tunisia, followed by a narrow 1-0 victory against Namibia in their second group game, and a goalless draw with Algeria in their final group match.
They had an easier outing in the quarter-final, thrashing Zambia 5-0, but were pushed to the limit in the semi-final by defending champions South Africa, who lost 1-2 to a late Nigerian goal.
The strength of the Falcons lies in their defense, having conceded only once throughout the tournament—via a penalty against South Africa. Offensively, they have also impressed, scoring 11 goals en route to the final.
However, the Falcons must be cautious of the determined Moroccan side, who are eager to win their first WAFCON title on home soil.
Having lost in the final of the last edition, Morocco will be desperate to avoid another heartbreak, especially in front of their fans. This makes the final a potentially fierce and emotional encounter.
The match is scheduled to take place at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, with kickoff set for 8 p.m.
