Supporting farmers, researchers key to food security – Expert

An agricultural expert, Dr. Adeola Odedina, has urged the government and corporate organisations to support farmers and researchers, stressing that research is vital for food security and economic growth.

Odedina, former Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State, made the call during a media chat with journalists on Thursday in Akure.

He said agricultural yields could be significantly improved if farmers and researchers received adequate support and motivation, potentially positioning Nigeria as a hub for food surplus.

The former commissioner lamented that despite Nigeria’s fertile land and favourable climate, farmers still face low productivity.

He emphasised that innovation and perseverance are key to achieving success, adding that research addressing real-world problems can have a lasting impact.

Odedina, who also served as Provost of the College of Agriculture, Akure, cited his work in cassava production as an example of how research and innovation can drive progress.

He encouraged researchers to remain determined, noting that challenges such as eviction or other setbacks are inevitable but can be overcome. He also urged them to find ways to benefit personally from their research while contributing to national development.
