Supreme Court affirms Okpebholo as Edo Governor

The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday affirmed Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Governor of Edo State.

The apex court also dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo.

According to the ruling by the panel of the court, delivered by Justice Lawal Garba, the appellants failed to prove their case of over-voting and non-compliance with the Electoral Act, among other violations to challenge Okpebholo’s electoral victory,

The court held that Ighodalo was not duly elected by the majority of lawful votes cast.

The court dismissed Ighodalo’s appeal for failing to provide unquestionably admissible evidence to support the claim that the election was tainted by irregularities and excessive voting, ruling that there was no basis to overturn the earlier ruling of the lower courts

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on May 29, 2025, had upheld the decision of the Edo State governorship Election Petition tribunal that affirmed the election victory of Governor Okpebholo.
