TCN expands transmission capacity, targets 10,000MW evacuation

By Kunle Sanni
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant boost in its transmission capacity, with plans to efficiently evacuate 10,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity within the next two years.
Speaking at the State House Weekly Briefing, TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, attributed the progress to sustained government support through the Ministry of Power and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He stated that the company’s current power evacuation capacity stands at 8,500MW, marking a substantial improvement in grid efficiency.
Highlighting key achievements, Abdulaziz noted that TCN has successfully:
- Installed and commissioned 66 power transformers
- Completed new transmission substations and upgraded transmission lines
- Delivered 6,000MVA worth of projects under World Bank-funded initiatives
- Achieved a 76.47% reduction in grid disturbances over the past five years
Looking ahead, the MD revealed that TCN is making strides in completing the World Bank-funded SCADA project, which is currently 69% complete. Once operational, the system will enhance real-time monitoring, improve grid management, and boost efficiency.
In addition, he disclosed that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is enforcing the Free Governor Control mechanism to stabilize the grid and minimize transmission losses.
To sustain these improvements, TCN has implemented an enhanced maintenance strategy focusing on regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and rapid response to faults.
