TDF condemns alleged foreign involvement in plot to overthrow Tinubu’s gov’t
The Democratic Front (TDF) has expressed outrage following revelations by the Nigeria Police Force about the involvement of a foreign national in an alleged plot to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The plot, reportedly disguised as a peaceful protest, has sparked widespread concern.
In a statement signed by TDF Chairman Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Chief Wale Adedayo, the group emphasized that the police investigation into the recent protest confirmed their earlier suspicions that those behind the demonstrations had ulterior motives beyond mere dissatisfaction with governance.
“We are outraged by revelations from the Nigeria Police Force about a despicable attempt to violently overthrow the 15-month-old democratic government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and to truncate Nigeria’s 25-year-old democracy,” the statement read in part.
TDF asserted that the police findings validated their belief that the true objective of the #EndBadGovernance protest was to forcefully terminate the current government and disrupt Nigeria’s democratic process.
The group also voiced concerns about foreign involvement in Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, stressing that despite government efforts, the country has yet to fully overcome these threats. TDF argued that the alleged attempt by a foreign national to sponsor a change in government under the guise of a protest should be condemned globally.
“It is known to all that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, neither permits nor envisages any method or means for effecting a change in the government of Nigeria, except through the electoral process as enshrined in the Electoral Act,” TDF noted. They warned that any attempts to circumvent this process could be considered treason.
Recalling the violence associated with the #EndBadGovernance protests, TDF criticized the alleged sponsors for exploiting the unrest for their own political gains, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property. They urged those who supported the protests under the guise of human rights to reflect on the damage caused to the nation’s image.
TDF commended the police and other security agencies for their professionalism and restraint during the protests, which they said demonstrated the maturity and competence of Nigeria’s law enforcement.
“The timely arraignment of the suspects before a court of law on 2nd September 2024, showcases the Tinubu administration’s commitment to the rule of law and respect for fundamental human rights,” the group added.
TDF concluded by calling on the police to apprehend the alleged foreign sponsor, who is currently at large, and ensure that justice is served.
