By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –
Two people were reportedly killed on Monday following a violent clash involving suspected political hoodlums and police operatives in Ikire, headquarters of Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
It was not immediately clear whether the suspected political hoodlums were attempting to forcefully take over the local government secretariat or the motor park, popularly known as Naira and Kobo Garage.
A source, however, said the hoodlums were on the expressway leading to both locations when the incident occurred.
It was also gathered that the hoodlums allegedly seized some residents, prompting other residents to alert the police.
Police operatives were said to have arrived at the scene to maintain law and order but were reportedly overpowered by the hoodlums. The divisional police officer (DPO) of Ikire Police Division was subsequently said to have mobilised additional operatives to the scene.
According to the source, the hoodlums allegedly seized the gun of a police officer, leading to an exchange of gunfire and the use of tear gas.
The clash was said to have led to the death of two unidentified persons, who were reportedly hit by stray bullets.
The incident caused residents and other people in the area to flee for safety, while businesses were reportedly shut as the situation escalated.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, was in Ikire to assess the situation and address the incident.
