Tension in Ondo as farmers protest destruction of crops by herdsmen

By Boye Oyeyemi –

There is rising tension in Ipogun, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, following allegations by farmers that herdsmen invaded their farmlands and destroyed crops worth millions of naira.

The farmers claimed the incident occurred on Saturday and Sunday, July 5 and 6, 2025, when the herders allegedly grazed their cattle on cultivated lands in the Oke Ose area of the town.

In a protest letter to security agencies, including the Ondo State Amotekun Corps Commander, the farmers alleged that the destruction affected maize, cassava, plantain, vegetables, yams and other crops planted in large commercial quantities.

The farmers said in the letter, “We are writing to report an incident of destruction of crops on our farm located at Oke Ose Ipogun in Ifedore Local Government on Saturday and Sunday (5th and 6th July, 2025). Our farm was visited by herdsmen who allowed their livestock to graze on our crops, resulting in significant damage.

“The crops destroyed include maize, cassava, plantain, vegetables, yams, etc. This destruction has resulted in substantial financial losses for our farm and has affected our livelihood.

“We urge you to investigate this incident and take necessary actions to prevent such recurrence and ensure perpetrators are arrested and made to pay compensation. We also request your assistance in ensuring that our farm is protected from further destruction. The pictures are attached to this letter for evidence. We would appreciate any support or guidance you can provide in this matter.”

Speaking on behalf of the affected farmers, Mr Tunde Fawoyi described the situation as “unacceptable and devastating”, noting the significant human, financial and time investment that had gone into the farms.

Another farmer, Mr Adefila Solomon Adebayo, put the estimated losses at over ₦20 million and urged the government to ensure the herders compensate the affected farm owners.
