Tensions erupt at high-level political meeting as Jigawa delegates disrupt proceedings

The National Political Consultative Group (North) meeting in Abuja, involving high-stakes political stakeholders, reportedly descended into chaos on Sunday following a heated confrontation over state representation.

Western Post reported that the high-level meeting, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, drew prominent political stakeholders from across the northern region.

The meeting was attended by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other key political figures.

According to a report by The Punch newspaper, proceedings were briefly disrupted following a disagreement over representation for Jigawa State.

Security personnel — including officers from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and private security teams — swiftly moved in to form a protective barrier around high-profile attendees, including Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi, as tensions mounted.

Calm was eventually restored through diplomatic appeals from senior figures in the room, after Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, was selected alongside another delegate to speak on behalf of the state, allowing the meeting to proceed.
