The Man, Felix Owolabi Akinloye, popularly called ‘Owoblow’

Dr. Felix Owolabi Akinloye, fondly referred to as “Owoblow,” epitomizes modesty, humility, and a remarkable disposition. Born on January 24, 1954, in Inisha, Osun State, Nigeria, Owolabi’s formative years were influenced by his Catholic upbringing and foundational education at the United Nations Primary School in Kaduna.
Early Education and Career
Owolabi’s educational journey began at Government Secondary School, Dutse-ma, followed by training at the Teacher’s Training College, Kaduna. He later pursued higher education at the University of Lagos, earning a degree in Physical and Health Education in 1978.
His academic pursuit culminated in a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Sports Management, establishing him as an expert in his field.
Owolabi’s passion for football was ignited during his primary school days, where he participated in the Sardauna Cup. He honed his skills with Kaduna Rocks FC and Raccah Rovers of Kano before being called up to the Green Eagles in 1977. Known for his versatility, Owolabi played as a midfielder in the 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), contributing to Nigeria’s historic first victory in the tournament.

Owolabi’s illustrious football career boasts several accomplishments, including:
1980 AFCON Winner: Key player in Nigeria’s maiden AFCON victory.
1978 AFCON Third Place: Instrumental in securing a podium finish for Nigeria.

After retiring, Owolabi transitioned seamlessly into coaching. In 1986, he attended a football coaching course in England, sponsored by Chief Lekan Salami. His coaching career flourished as he discovered and mentored talents like Mutiu Adepoju and Tunde Odubola. Owolabi was part of the technical crew that saved Shooting Stars from relegation in 1988 and guided them to win the CAF Cup in 1992.
