Four persons, including three students of Prospect High School, Abanla, and a commercial motorcyclist, were killed on Tuesday in a fatal road accident in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. along the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre Road in Oluyole Local Government Area. The Chairman of the local government, Asiwaju Akeem Olatunji, confirmed the incident in a statement and announced immediate measures to improve road safety in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened when a truck belonging to a construction company attempted to overtake another vehicle and crushed a motorcycle conveying the students. The motorcyclist and two students died on the spot, while a third student was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately, and the police have since impounded the truck and launched a full investigation into the incident.
The crash triggered a protest by residents, students, and commercial motorcyclists, who blocked the road in outrage and demanded immediate government intervention. Protesters called for stricter regulations to curb reckless driving, particularly by trailer drivers operating in the area.
Addressing the crowd, Olatunji condemned the recklessness that led to the tragedy and assured the affected families of government support. He also said the construction company responsible for the truck would be held accountable and made to compensate the families of the victims.
He further revealed that discussions were ongoing with the company to implement stronger safety protocols for its drivers and vehicles, adding that stricter enforcement measures would be put in place to avoid future incidents.
Meanwhile, Prospect High School has been thrown into mourning, as students and staff grieve the loss of their classmates in the tragic accident.
