Tinubu appoints Opeyemi Agbaje as new PenCom chairman

By Kunle Sanni

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Opeyemi Agbaje, a seasoned banker and policy expert, as chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).

Agbaje, a former Assistant General Manager at Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) and Executive Director at Metropolitan Bank, takes over the leadership of the commission following sustained pressure from organised labour. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had recently issued the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to reconstitute PenCom’s governing board, warning of possible industrial action.

With more than 40 years of professional experience spanning law, banking, finance, academia, and business consulting, Agbaje is widely regarded as a leading voice in business and economic policy.

A law graduate of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1985 and a member of the Nigerian Bar since 1986, Agbaje earned a master’s degree in law from the University of Lagos in 1989 and an MBA from IESE Business School, Spain, in 1997. He is currently completing a doctorate in Business Administration at Eaton Business School.
