Tinubu calls for African awakening amid USAID fund suspension controversy

President Bola Tinubu has urged African nations, particularly Nigeria, to take charge of their future in light of recent global controversies.

Speaking on Thursday at the launch of former military president Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that recent developments in the United States and Europe should serve as a wake-up call for Africa.

Although the president did not directly reference the recent suspension of USAID funding, his remarks come amid growing concerns over U.S. policies under President Donald Trump, which have halted financial aid to several African countries.

“I am glad about what is happening in America, Europe, and the contradictions you are seeing now,” Tinubu said. “What is it telling us? It is telling us to wake up and make Africa a better place—particularly this country, Nigeria.”

The suspension of USAID funds has sparked widespread debate, with many experts viewing it as a call for African nations to strengthen their economic and political independence.

Tinubu’s comments appeared to echo this sentiment, calling for decisive action and responsibility from African leaders.

“I’ve seen so much, and I understand the responsibility and the need to take some tough decisions on behalf of this country,” Tinubu said, underlining his commitment to navigating Nigeria through its current challenges.

The president also took a moment to acknowledge the resilience of Nigerians. “I want to thank all of you for your patience and perseverance,” he said.

The book launch brought together political leaders, dignitaries, and other influential figures to celebrate Babangida’s contributions to Nigeria’s political history. .
