President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Onyema Ugochukwu, esteemed journalist and former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), as he marks his 80th birthday on November 9, 2024.
In a statement issued on Friday, President Tinubu lauded Ugochukwu’s impactful life and career, highlighting his contributions during pivotal moments in Nigeria’s history, which continue to inspire younger generations.
Ugochukwu’s journey began with his service in the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), where he fought alongside Biafran forces, driven by a profound sense of conviction. After the war, he resumed his education, graduating with distinction from university.
Starting his career in 1973 as an economic research assistant at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Ugochukwu soon transitioned to journalism in 1975 with the Daily Times of Nigeria. There, he pioneered business journalism in Nigeria, advancing to roles such as Business Editor, Daily Newspaper Editor, and Executive Director.
As a Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the founding Chairman of the NDDC, Ugochukwu exhibited a deep commitment to national development. He even pursued the governorship of Abia State, demonstrating his dedication to public service, though he did not succeed in the bid.
Today, Ugochukwu is celebrated as an elder statesman and a recipient of the national honor, Commander of the Order of the Niger. His life is marked by diligence, resilience, altruism, and humility.
President Tinubu joins in celebrating Ugochukwu’s 80th birthday, praying for his continued health and longevity, and expressing hope that Nigeria may benefit from his wisdom and insights for many more years.
