Tinubu celebrates Super Falcons’ WAFCON victory in video call, says ‘Nigeria is proud of you’

President Bola Tinubu has praised the Super Falcons for their triumphant performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their 3-2 victory over Morocco as a moment of national pride and continental significance.

Speaking via video call directly to the team in the dressing room after the match, President Tinubu congratulated the players and coaching crew for securing Nigeria’s record 10th WAFCON title in Rabat.

“We are very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You lifted the trophy and we are all very, very happy,” the President told the jubilant players. “You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team—including the ministers and officials.”

In his message, President Tinubu specifically commended players Esther, Shade, and Jennifer, while also sending regards to Rasheedat, whose penalty he described as “a very courageous exercise.”

“Your victory means a lot for the country and the continent as a whole,” he added. “Safe journey home, enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, and God bless you.”

Also present during the video call were the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications, O’tega Ogra; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Tourism and Culture, Hannatu Musa Musawa; and Minister of State for Finance, Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite.

In response, Rasheedat Ajibade, the team captain and best player of the match, thanked the President for the payment of their full allowances and promised to bring the trophy to him in Nigeria.

“I’m looking forward to that,” the President replied.
