Tinubu commissions N73 billion Customs project in Ogun

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday inaugurated a ₦73 billion legacy project in Iperu, Ogun State, comprising 142 buildings for the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The president highlighted that once completed, the facility would offer world-class standards and serve the broader public interest.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, emphasised that the project would boost revenue generation, facilitate trade, and enhance enforcement operations. He added that the new complex would improve officers’ welfare and operational efficiency, particularly in Lagos and its surrounding areas.
“This project, estimated at about ₦73 billion from inception, is currently 45 percent complete. We seek Mr President’s understanding to review aspects of the initial approval to ensure completion within his tenure,” Adeniyi stated.
He explained that the expansion was necessary as the existing Ikeja office could no longer accommodate the growing Customs operations. “All FOU activities in Lagos will eventually relocate to Iperu. Thirty years ago, Ikeja was sufficient, but the scope of operations has significantly expanded,” he said.
Adeniyi also praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for providing land and supporting the project, and acknowledged former Comptroller-General Ahmed Alli for initiating the project and securing the site.
The complex will feature a Customs warehouse nearing completion to support land and aviation operations, as well as a training college aimed at strengthening personnel development. Officers have already been deployed to Ogun Airport to manage cargo operations on the tarmac and in the terminal, with federal support following six months of engagement.
The contractor, Mohammed Daggash, stated that the 100-hectare site would host 142 buildings, including a training centre, university, and sports complex. He described the initiative as a landmark investment designed to strengthen institutional capacity and deliver long-term value for the service.
