President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the United States on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100.

In a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Tinubu described Carter, the 39th President of the United States, as a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and a global statesman whose life was a beacon of service to humanity.

“President Carter demonstrated to leaders worldwide the profound impact of dedication and service beyond the highest office,” Tinubu said, highlighting Carter’s tireless efforts to promote peace, democracy, and the eradication of tropical diseases during his post-presidential life.

“President Carter showed us all how to remain relevant and impactful after leaving the esteemed position of President of the United States,” Tinubu remarked.

He tackled challenges faced by the developing world, from combating diseases to mediating conflicts and advancing democratic values. He exemplified grace, dignity, and a profound respect for humanity.”

Tinubu also fondly remembered Carter as a compassionate friend to Nigeria, praising his significant contributions through The Carter Center.

He specifically highlighted Carter’s efforts in eradicating Guinea worm disease and river blindness in Nigeria, which dramatically improved the lives of countless Nigerians.

Reflecting on Nigeria-U.S. relations, President Tinubu recalled Carter’s historic visit to Nigeria in March 1978 and his three-day stay at the State House in Marina, Lagos.

He noted that the visit marked a pivotal moment in U.S. foreign policy, laying the foundation for a pragmatic relationship between the United States and Africa, with Nigeria at its center.

President Tinubu expressed hope that Carter’s legacy of decency, character, and humanity, both in and out of office, will continue to inspire Americans and leaders around the world to embrace the true essence of leadership.

“President Carter’s unwavering commitment to the betterment of humanity has left an indelible mark on the world. May his life and legacy continue to guide us all,” Tinubu concluded.
