Tinubu declares 8th National Youth Games open in Asaba

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially declared open the 8th edition of the National Youth Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, on Thursday.

The President, represented by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, emphasized the significance of the games in fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence.

In his remarks, Enoh highlighted the growing success of the games since their inception in 2013, noting that each edition has witnessed improvements in standards, athlete participation, and state involvement.

This year’s event features 4,548 athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, competing in 36 sports. The Minister stressed that these developments are aimed at talent discovery and nurturing athletes who will go on to represent Nigeria in international competitions, including the Olympics and Paralympics.

Enoh also lauded grassroots sports as a vital element in the nation’s sports development and urged state governors and stakeholders to invest in young athletes. On behalf of the President, he expressed gratitude to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the people of the state for their commitment to hosting the games since 2023. He further acknowledged the support from other state governors and the FCT Minister.

Calling for fair play, the Minister urged all participating states to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship, and encouraged spectators to support the young athletes as they compete.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, in his address, reiterated the state’s dedication to sports, stating that it will continue its efforts in sports development over the next five years. He described the National Youth Games as a crucial platform for discovering new talent and promoting unity and human development across Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Evang. Solomon Ogba, assured participants of excellent hospitality and safety during their stay in Asaba, noting the committee’s preparedness for the event.

The National Youth Games is expected to serve as a stepping stone for young athletes, providing them with opportunities to showcase their talent on a national stage.
