Tinubu deserves empathy, not mockery – Rights activist

By Boye Oyeyemi –
A Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Banji Alabi, has criticised the public ridicule that followed President Bola Tinubu’s brief lapse at an event in Turkey, saying Nigerians should respond with empathy rather than mockery.
Alabi, who spoke in a statement on Thursday, said he was disturbed by what he described as the insensitive celebration and politicisation of the incident by some individuals, describing the reactions as lacking basic decency and compassion.
He said the episode had been blown out of proportion, stressing that the President, like every other human being, is prone to momentary errors and imperfections.
According to him, a simple fall or lapse should not be used as a yardstick to judge a leader’s character or fitness for office, adding that Nigerians should instead show understanding and restraint.
Alabi urged citizens to channel their energy towards prayers and constructive engagement on issues affecting the country, rather than turning a minor incident into a political tool.
The activist, who is also the Convener of the Ondo State Eminent Persons Group, called on Nigerians to continue supporting Tinubu, whom he described as one of the most dynamic and result-oriented leaders the country has produced.
He explained that the President has demonstrated commitment to infrastructure development, economic growth, social welfare programmes, national stability, anti-corruption efforts, and renewed international partnerships.
Alabi therefore appealed to Nigerians to focus on the President’s achievements and contributions to national development, rather than politicising the incident, urging that empathy and kindness should prevail in public discourse.
