President Bola Tinubu has directed that the newly established Committee of Elders for Benue State must include all former governors of the state as well as the current Governor of Nasarawa State.
This was disclosed on Wednesday in a post by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, on his X account.
Recounting part of the President’s directive, Dare, who was a member of the presidential delegation that recently visited communities affected by the latest wave of killings, said Tinubu urged Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, to work with all stakeholders and act as a father to everyone in the state, irrespective of political or ethnic affiliations.
He added that President Tinubu appealed to the people of Benue to unite and cooperate with the government in finding lasting solutions to the crisis.
According to reports, the tragic attack in Yelewata village left over 200 people dead, with several injured and hundreds displaced.
The President emphasized the need for traditional rulers to collaborate closely with the state government in maintaining peace and order. He also instructed Governor Alia to secure land for ranching as a way to address one of the root causes of the conflict.
He said the new Committee of Elders, now expanded to include all past governors and the Governor of Nasarawa State, is expected to play a critical advisory and mediatory role in the peace process.
