Tinubu, governors set up committee to deliver lower transport fares from October

President Bola Tinubu and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have agreed to establish a joint Federal and State committee to begin the immediate implementation of measures aimed at reducing transportation costs across the country.
Tinubu disclosed this in a post on his X account on Thursday after meeting with the APC Governors’ Forum at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President said the committee would coordinate efforts to bring down intra-state transport fares by taking advantage of cheaper fuel alternatives, particularly Compressed Natural Gas and electric vehicles.
“We have agreed to set up a joint Federal and State committee to begin implementing these measures immediately,” Tinubu said.
He said the initiative was driven by the governors, who had resolved to take immediate steps to reduce transportation costs in their respective states.
According to him, the Federal Government’s ongoing investment in the energy transition provides an opportunity for states to pass the resulting savings on to commuters.
Tinubu said more than 120,000 vehicles had so far been converted to CNG nationwide under the Presidential CNG Initiative, while over 100,000 additional conversion kits were being processed.
He added that the government was expanding conversion centres and refuelling infrastructure to support the transition.
The President said the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund was also financing more than 100 gas projects nationwide, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations.
He said four of the projects had been commissioned in Lagos, Abuja and Owerri in May, including a 15-station refuelling network in Lagos and a CNG facility in Abuja capable of serving 1,000 cars and tricycles and 50 trucks and buses daily.
Tinubu further disclosed that he had directed the rollout of an additional 500 CNG refuelling stations across the country.
The new stations, he said, would bring the total number of CNG refuelling stations under the programme to 1,000, following the 500 stations earlier ordered by the Fund.
