President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto on his 73rd birthday, praising his decades-long service to Nigeria’s democracy, peacebuilding, and human development.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Bishop Kukah as “a highly revered priest whose compassion for the poor and underprivileged continues to influence people-centred development policies in Nigeria and across Africa.”

President Tinubu highlighted Kukah’s long record of public service beyond the pulpit, recalling his contributions as a member of Nigeria’s Truth Commission, Secretary of the Political Reform Conference, and member of the Electoral Reform Committee.

He also commended the cleric’s efforts in fostering dialogue between Christians and Muslims during his tenure as Chairman of Nigeria’s Inter-Religious Dialogue initiative.

“Bishop Kukah’s role in the struggle for the return of democracy in Nigeria and his support for peace and harmony are remarkable,” Tinubu said, expressing hope that the bishop’s tireless advocacy for justice, democracy, and good governance “will remain an irreplaceable treasure.”

The President prayed for Bishop Kukah’s continued good health, long life, and wisdom as he marks another year of impactful service.
