President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the successful revitalization of the Port Harcourt refinery, describing it as a pivotal step in Nigeria’s journey toward energy self-sufficiency.
The refinery officially resumed petroleum product loading on November 26, 2024.
The President praised the foundational efforts of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who initiated the comprehensive rehabilitation of Nigeria’s refineries, and acknowledged the African Export-Import Bank for its financial support in realizing this critical project.
He also extended accolades to NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, for his leadership in surmounting significant challenges to ensure the Port Harcourt refinery’s reactivation.
Building on this achievement, President Tinubu has directed NNPCL to expedite the reactivation of the second Port Harcourt refinery, alongside the Warri and Kaduna refineries. These projects aim to increase Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity and reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel.
“With these efforts, supported by private refineries, Nigeria is on track to becoming a major energy hub while giving unprecedented attention to the gas sector,” the President remarked.
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s longstanding challenge of being a leading crude oil producer with insufficient refining capacity for domestic consumption.
“This milestone highlights the importance of patience, integrity, and accountability in rebuilding our national infrastructure,” he said, urging institutions and citizens to remain steadfast in their responsibilities.
