By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has sent a message of encouragement to Nigeria’s Super Falcons ahead of their showdown with host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat.
In a statement issued Thursday evening, President Tinubu praised the team’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament, commending their determination, discipline, and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.
“Tonight, you stand at the cusp of history,” the President said. “You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength.”
He lauded the team’s gesture of compassion after their visit to South African midfielder Gabriela Salgado, who was injured during their semi-final encounter. Tinubu described it as “a simple act of compassion that reflects our sisterly affection and shared African values.”
The President also highlighted the Super Falcons’ undefeated run so far, noting their flawless group stage, strong knockout performances, and defensive resilience, having conceded just one goal in the tournament. “If statistics alone win matches, you are already champions,” he stated.
Emphasizing the government’s support, Tinubu announced that a high-level delegation has been dispatched to Rabat to cheer the team to victory. The delegation includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.
President Tinubu expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bring home a record tenth WAFCON title and extended appreciation to the players’ families, coaching crew, and Nigerian supporters in Morocco for their unwavering support.
