Tinubu hails SupremeCourt ruling on LG autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming the statutory rights of local governments, calling it a significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s constitutional governance.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Thursday, President Tinubu highlighted the longstanding issue of ineffective local government administration as a major barrier to Nigeria’s progress.

He pointed out that governance at the local level, crucial for socio-political development, has been largely absent.

The Supreme Court’s ruling mandates that the federal government pay allocations directly to local government councils from the federation account, bypassing state governments. A seven-member panel of justices declared that state governments have been misusing funds meant for local governments.

The court also directed that allocations to local governments governed by unelected officials appointed by governors should be withheld.

Reacting to the judgment, President Tinubu stressed that local council leaders now have the responsibility to ensure that services reach the grassroots.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, at all levels.

“This judgment ensures that our people, especially the poor, can hold their local leaders accountable,” he stated.

President Tinubu noted that his administration initiated the suit due to a firm belief in the necessity of providing relief to citizens.

“Today’s judgment guarantees that only elected local officials will control local resources. It stands as a strong affirmation that we can use legal means to restructure our country and economy for a fairer society,” he affirmed.

He emphasized that the ruling will enhance the provision of essential services, such as road maintenance, street lighting, and community security, which have suffered due to the previous emasculation of local governments.

The decision, he noted, is historically significant and reinforces efforts to enhance Nigeria’s federal structure for national development.

President Tinubu also commended Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his diligent and patriotic efforts in the case.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to upholding the principles of the constitution and fostering a governance system that benefits all Nigerians.
