Tinubu holds security meeting with service chiefs, new IGP

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday presided over a high-level security meeting with service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, amid growing attacks on security personnel and military formations across the country.

The nearly two-hour closed-door meeting marked the first security briefing involving the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, since his assumption of office on February 28, 2026.

Security chiefs arrived discreetly without their official vehicles and departed the Villa around 5:10 pm after extensive deliberations with the President.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of renewed violence, particularly in Nigeria’s Northeast, where insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have intensified attacks on military positions and vulnerable communities.

Within the past week, at least three commanding officers leading forward operation bases were reportedly killed following coordinated assaults on security formations.

Recent incidents include attacks in Ngoshe, Konduga, Marte, Jakana and Mainok in Borno State, some of which reportedly involved abductions and destruction of military assets.

Although details of Thursday’s discussions were not officially disclosed, the meeting was believed to have focused on the spike in attacks on security personnel, protection of vulnerable communities, and improved coordination among Nigeria’s security agencies.

The security consultations followed earlier assurances by President Tinubu that his administration remains committed to defeating insurgency.
