President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tributes to elder statesman and former Osun State governor, Bisi Akande, as he marked his 87th birthday, while also congratulating administrator and entrepreneur, Peregrino Kolawole Paul, on his 65th birthday.
In a statement on Friday, President Tinubu described Chief Akande as a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the progressive movement, praising his immense contributions to nation-building and the institutionalisation of democracy.
Tinubu noted that Akande, a former interim chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), played a historic role in laying the foundation of the party that went on to unseat an incumbent federal government in 2015.
The president traced Akande’s career from the private sector, where he worked as an accountant with British Petroleum, to public service, highlighting his roles as Secretary to the State Government and Deputy Governor in the old Oyo State, as well as Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.
He described Akande as a mentor, leader and trusted ally whose integrity, wisdom and steadfast commitment to democratic ideals have continued to inspire generations of political actors.
President Tinubu also acknowledged Akande’s support for his political journey and the current administration, describing his backing of the Renewed Hope Agenda as invaluable. He prayed for continued good health and renewed strength for the elder statesman.
In a separate message, President Tinubu congratulated Mr Peregrino Kolawole Paul on his 65th birthday, commending his decades of service in both the public and private sectors.
The president highlighted Peregrino’s career spanning the insurance industry, service at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, entrepreneurship and grassroots politics, noting his consistent contributions to political development in Lagos State and the South-West since 1999.
