President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Oluwole-Johnson on the passing of their patriarch, Ben Oluwole-Johnson, a U.S.-based business executive and real estate magnate, who died on September 17, 2024, in Crete, Illinois, at the age of 72. Funeral rites are scheduled to begin on Friday, with burial set for October 5.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu, in a personal tribute to the former Ondo State governorship aspirant and CEO of Benol Management and Development Company, described Oluwole-Johnson as an exceptionally intelligent and forward-thinking individual.
“His rugged determination and tenacity reflected the passion we all shared for Nigeria,” President Tinubu remarked. “Though his exuberance may have caused challenges at times, it was a testament to his vibrant spirit and unwavering commitment to the betterment of himself, his community, and his nation.”
Reflecting on their time together in Chicago, Illinois, Tinubu noted that during their encounters, Oluwole-Johnson, fondly referred to as “Mr. Ben,” consistently displayed remarkable intellect and business acumen, always eager to showcase his brilliance.
The President highlighted Oluwole-Johnson’s extraordinary philanthropic efforts, particularly his role in securing and donating over $42 million worth of hospital equipment to Nigeria, with a primary focus on Lagos State.
“Despite the extensive and demanding nature of the work, Ben never sought any financial reward for his efforts,” Tinubu noted.
President Tinubu also reflected on Oluwole-Johnson’s deep love for Nigeria, which spurred him to run for governor of Ondo State. His campaign garnered strong support from the Nigerian community in Chicago, including President Tinubu himself.
“Although he did not succeed in his gubernatorial bid, his audacity and courage earned his wife, Moji, the affectionate title of ‘First Lady’ in my eyes and in the hearts of many Nigerians.”
Tinubu lauded Oluwole-Johnson’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria, even as his health deteriorated.
“When several of us formed ‘The Caring Group’ to express our love for Nigeria, especially Lagos State, Ben remained a key contributor,” Tinubu said. “Even as his health declined, he continued to offer his business expertise. His wife, Moji, was always there to represent him, ensuring his influence and contributions endured.”
“We will deeply miss Mr. Ben, but we take comfort in the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” President Tinubu concluded.
