By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Dan Agbese, veteran journalist, author, and co-founder of the pioneering Newswatch magazine. Agbese, who held the traditional title of Awan’Otun of Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, died in Lagos at the age of 81.

Describing the loss as “painful and a profound setback to Nigeria’s media industry,” President Tinubu said Agbese played a transformative role in shaping modern journalism in the country. He noted that Agbese and his Newswatch colleagues ushered in a new era of investigative and interpretative reporting, setting professional standards that redefined ethical journalism.

“Dan Agbese was not just a journalist; he was an institution. His pen shaped public opinion, strengthened democratic discourse, and inspired a generation,” the President said, extending condolences to the bereaved family and the media community.

In a separate statement, President Tinubu congratulated Honourable Adegboyega Adefarati, lawmaker representing Akoko Southeast and Southwest Federal Constituency of Ondo State, on his 60th birthday.

The President praised Adefarati’s long-standing contributions to national development, highlighting his service as a teacher, banker, and dedicated public servant. He commended the Chairman of the House Committee on Labour, Productivity and Employment for fostering industrial harmony and advocating stronger legislative interventions in infrastructure, youth empowerment, and economic growth.

President Tinubu wished the lawmaker continued strength, good health, and greater achievements in the years ahead.
