Tinubu mourns victims of Yola flood, Niger boat tragedy – orders emergency response

By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the recent flood disaster in Yola, Adamawa State, and the boat mishap in Guni village, Niger State, which claimed several lives and displaced many residents.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended his condolences to the affected families and communities, describing the incidents as “tragic and avoidable.”
While acknowledging that climate change contributes to flooding globally, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to avoid human actions that exacerbate such situations. He also lamented the continued loss of lives on waterways despite ongoing public awareness campaigns by federal agencies.
“The persistence of such incidents is worrying,” the President said, urging opinion leaders and relevant authorities to intensify advocacy on safety, particularly in riverine communities.
President Tinubu commended the emergency response efforts of local agencies in Adamawa and Niger States, including local divers, volunteers, and community leaders involved in search and rescue operations.
To strengthen the response, he directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Emergency Response Centre to immediately collaborate with state authorities for effective rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas.
He further called on boat operators and waterway users to strictly adhere to safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.
