Tinubu renames Federal University of Education, Kano, after Yusuf Maitama Sule

President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in honor of the late statesman and diplomat.

Yusuf Maitama Sule (1929–2017) was a key figure in Nigeria’s political and diplomatic history. He served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid.

His career also included roles as Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959), Leader of Nigeria’s Delegation to the Conference of Independent States (1960), Nigeria’s first Federal Commissioner for Public Complaints (1976), and Minister of Mines and Power.

President Tinubu stated that renaming the university after Sule is intended to immortalize his legacy and inspire young Nigerians to embrace integrity, patriotism, and nationalism.

The Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education is one of seven specialized universities of education established by the Federal Government. Originally owned by the Kano State Government, it continues to play a vital role in training teachers and strengthening Nigeria’s education sector.
