Tinubu says Nigeria at crossroads, charges governors on sustainable growth

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu on Monday said Nigeria is at a defining crossroads, facing deep-rooted economic and structural challenges but equipped with the resilience and determination needed to overcome them.

The president made the remarks while delivering his address at the second edition of the National Economic Council (NEC) Conference held at the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu acknowledged that the country is grappling with inherited structural problems, including macroeconomic imbalances, infrastructure deficits, unemployment, widespread poverty, climate-related vulnerabilities, and limited fiscal space. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, citing the strength and creativity of its people.

According to the president, national progress depends on inclusive development that reaches all parts of the federation and improves the lives of the most vulnerable citizens.

“Nigeria’s diversity is our strength,” Tinubu said, noting that growth at the subnational level is essential for overall national development. He stressed that when every state prospers, the entire country benefits.

The president also highlighted the importance of ensuring that economic growth reaches the poorest households, arguing that inclusive growth is critical to strengthening national stability.

Tinubu further emphasised the need for sustainable development policies, saying long-term planning is necessary to secure a better future for coming generations.

“When development is sustainable, our children inherit hope,” he said.
