Tinubu seeks Senate approval to remove suspended resident electoral commissioners

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate’s approval to dismiss the resident electoral commissioners (RECs) of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states.

The commissioners—Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto)—were suspended by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following allegations of misconduct during the 2023 general elections.

In a letter read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday, Tinubu emphasized that the suspensions occurred before his administration took office.

“The Senate is invited to note that the three resident electoral commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2023, before the advent of the current administration,” the letter stated.

Tinubu urged the Senate to act swiftly on the matter, noting his expectation that the chamber would soon confirm new nominees to fill the vacant positions.

He concluded his letter by extending his highest consideration to the senators, expressing confidence that their prompt action would reinforce the integrity of the electoral process.
