Tinubu sends delegation to support victims of Kano’s Singer Market fire

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead a high-powered federal government delegation to Kano to console victims of the recent Singer Market fire disaster.

This was disclosed on Sunday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The delegation, set to depart Abuja tomorrow, will convey the president’s condolences to traders who lost billions of Naira in the weekend blaze, the second fire to hit the market in just two weeks.

On behalf of the Federal Government, the team will also pledge financial assistance to aid victims and support Kano State in facilitating the swift reopening of the market.

Members of the delegation include Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin; Senator Kawu Ismaila; and Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Appropriation Committee.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Bernard M. Doro, and Mrs Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will also be part of the team.

President Tinubu, who earlier spoke by telephone with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by the fire, which started on Saturday evening and continued into Sunday morning, destroying large sections of Nigeria’s largest food market.

Alarmed that the latest incident came less than two weeks after a previous fire destroyed dozens of shops and properties at the same market, the president has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the recurrent market fires, which continue to leave traders in distress.
