Tinubu, UK PM Starmer pledge stronger Nigeria–Britain ties

President Bola Tinubu and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic, security and economic relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The two leaders spoke at 10 Downing Street following bilateral engagements during President Tinubu’s official visit to the UK.
Prime Minister Starmer noted that Nigeria and Britain already share strong cooperation but said the visit presents an opportunity to deepen the partnership further.
He highlighted plans to expand collaboration in security and defence, adding that newly signed agreements, including plans to refurbish Nigerian seaports, would boost trade and economic exchanges between both countries.
President Tinubu, in his remarks, emphasised the need to nurture existing trade agreements and stimulate stronger economic relations that would benefit both nations.
He said Nigeria is currently undergoing significant economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy despite difficult challenges.
“What we are facing is not a small challenge,” the President said, noting that Nigeria continues to confront terrorism and banditry, challenges he said are further complicated by the effects of climate change.
Tinubu called on Britain to deepen its cooperation and accelerate its support to help Nigeria address security threats and other shared challenges.
